Paleo Diet – What Are the Key Benefits?

As more and more people seek healthier and more nutritious dietary options, the Paleo Diet has continued to see large increases in popularity as a result. If the term Paleo is new to you, put simply it’s a diet which focuses on cutting out processed foods and instead only eating foods which humans traditionally used to hunt for (meat, fish, vegetables etc.).

But just why is the Paleo lifestyle becoming a popular choice for those signing up for meal plans, and looking to improve their overall nutrition and health? Well, according to Loren Cordain, PhD, Professor of Health and Exercise Science at Colorado State University, the Paleo diet provides a healthy ratio of saturated-to-unsaturated fatty acids whilst it also increases vitamin and nutrient consumption, and contains an optimal balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates.

Other key benefits of the paleo diet include:

Helping to sustain weight loss

This is down to a number of factors including; the diets’ low carb nature and also its complete eradication of low nutrition, high calorie processed foods.

Helping to improve muscle mass

The diet is packed with plenty of lean meat, which is critical for both fat loss and muscle building processes. Increasing your protein intake can also help to prevent muscle atrophy which occurs when muscle fibres are broken down to support your body’s energy needs.

Helping to reduce hunger and increase satisfaction

The paleo diet has been found to eradicate this, as protein takes longer to digest, leaving you feeling fuller and more satisfied for longer after meals. As a result of this, you’re also likely to find yourself consuming smaller meals, an approach which is known to provide a number of key benefits.

Helping to reduce inflammation
The Paleo diet encourages the consumption of sustainably farmed and ethically sourced produce such as grass-fed beef and wild salmon, whilst it is also rich in healthy fats and nutrient dense foods, such as nuts and vegetables. This combination of factors leads to a higher intake of nutrients, with the body also getting regular doses of the essential omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which help with the overall reduction of inflammation in the body.

It is clear that the paleo diet offers a number of key nutritional and health benefits, however as with other types of diet, just because it’s popular doesn’t mean it’s for you. For an in-depth breakdown of a number of other diets, click here.
